MASALA CHAI (SPICED TEA)

  • 3 cups water (4 cups if not adding milk)
  • 2 tsp black tea leaves 
  • 3 pods green cardamom, crushed
  • 2 cm piece ginger, chopped
  • 2 cloves (laung), crushed
  • 2 cm piece cinnamon (dalchini), crushed
  • 1 cup milk, preferably toned*(optional)
  • You may replace cinnamon and clove with ½ tsp fennel seeds (Saunf) and ¼ tsp black pepper (kali mirch), if the taste is acceptable
  • If using chai masala (ready-made spiced tea mix), skip cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves, and use 1 levelled tsp of chai masala instead.

Note: Refer to recipe of Chai Masala (Spiced Tea Mix)

*You may use toned milk/skimmed milk for tea preparation

  1. Boil 3 cups of water in a kettle or a saucepan.
  2. Crush green cardamom, cloves, cinnamon in a mortar pestle into a power spice mixture.
  3. Add chopped ginger and crushed spice powder into the water.
  4. Once the ingredients boil, add tea leaves and let the mixture simmer on low flame for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Add milk if desired and let the tea simmer on low flame for another 2-3 minutes. If not adding milk, proceed to the next step.
  6. Strain the tea and enjoy.
